Italian Renaissance Style Diptych
This interesting oil on canvas diptych is a contemporary homage to Piero della Francesca’s “Diptych of Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza,” reimagined with modern sitters who appear to be friends of the artist rather than Renaissance nobility, signed lower right, dedication attached verso. Retaining the iconic strict side profiles, pale skies, and distant rolling landscape, the work borrows the compositional gravitas of the 15th-century original while shifting its tone from courtly grandeur to something more personal and intimate.
On the left, a woman is rendered with calm poise. Opposite her, the male sitter is dressed in a striking red garment and cap, meets her gaze across the space of the diptych. His expression is steady, familiar, almost companionable rather than ceremonial. What was once a dynastic statement becomes a celebration of friendship and admiration. The sitters face one another not as rulers of a territory, but as equals sharing an intimate moment, how fun!
