Mid Century Portrait on Hide

Striking early portrait by Canadian Ojibwe/Anishinaabe artist Don Ningewance (b. 1948), dated 1974. Painted in acrylic directly onto hide, stretched and hand-laced over a wooden hoop. The work depicts an older man in a cap and glasses against a warm circular ground, combining expressive portraiture with an unusual sculptural presentation.

An especially interesting early example from Ningewance’s career, predating his transition to full-time painting in the early 1980s.
