“Northern Wheat”, Oil Landscape on Board
Energetic oil landscape on board by artist Kenneth Gordon (1929-1998) from Manitoba, signed lower right, titled “Northern Wheat” and dated 82 verso, depicting a harvested wheat field under a lively northern sky.
The composition is filled with golden sheaves of wheat, arranged in clusters across the field and receding toward a dense green tree line. In the foreground, the wheat is painted with thick, expressive strokes, giving the bundles a wind-tossed quality. The brushwork is especially vigorous here, with ochres, straw yellows, browns, and pale highlights layered to suggest dry stalks catching the light.
Beyond the field, a band of trees in rich greens and yellow-greens creates a natural boundary. Above, the sky opens in bright blue, broken by broad, textured grey-white clouds. The cloud forms are handled with visible, sweeping brushstrokes, echoing the movement and rhythm of the wheat below.
It feels rustic and plein-air - direct, immediate, and grounded in the Canadian prairie landscape tradition. The sensation of late-summer harvest air is perfectly captured here..
