Original Drawing by Clara Ledesma
A dreamy, original Clara Ledesma drawing framed under anti glare glass, signed and dated 83 lower right: a calm, mask-like face framed by wild, flame-like hair - soft vine curls on one side, warm sunburst flowers on the other. She holds an oversized, beautifully patterned hand fan, and the background fades from burnt orange into cool blue and bright green, giving it a surreal glow.
Clara Ledesma Terrazas (1924-1999) was an Afro-Dominican artist and teacher from Santiago de los Caballeros. She trained at the National School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo (graduated 1948), later studied and exhibited in Europe, and moved to New York City in 1961 where she lived and worked for the rest of her life. Her work spans expressionism/surrealism/abstraction, often blending bold color, mysticism, and (at times) themes around blackness and racial inequity.
