Original abstract work on paper by noted Canadian-American painter Harold Feist (1945–2021), signed lower right.

Against a soft blue field, Feist layers sweeping passages of muted pink and charcoal with raised, gestural applications of white, vivid green and yellow acrylic. The contrast between flat expanses of colour and heavily textured, almost sculptural lines gives the composition a wonderfully spontaneous sense of movement and depth.

Feist studied at the University of Illinois and Maryland Institute College of Art and later taught at several Canadian institutions. Associated with the Colour Field movement, his practice was influenced by his relationships with critic Clement Greenberg and painter Jules Olitski, while developing a distinctive vocabulary of poured, stained and gestural paint.

This work has particularly appealing institutional provenance, retaining its original Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation, Toronto collection label, which identifies the artist, medium and dimensions and records its placement in the hospital’s Psychiatry department.
