Red Tulips on a Dark Ground, Watercolour on Paper

A bold original watercolour of five open red tulips glowing against a deep charcoal background. The petals are built up in layered, transparent washes of red, orange and coral, with the dark stamens showing at the centre of each bloom. The leaves are soft, streaky blue-greens that arch and curl through the composition. The dark ground makes the flowers stand out like a graphic print, so it's a striking piece with a lot of presence.
