Large Oil Still Life on Canvas
Wonderful oil composition on board, signed lower left, is a quiet still life built around two everyday objects and a bit of late-season nature. At center, a pale blue enamel vessel holds a dark brown jar, and from it rises a loose spray of branches with papery, pale leaves and a few berries. The foliage is mixed—some leaves are silvery-white and crisp, others have turned deep burgundy and rust, giving the arrangement an autumn-to-winter feeling. In the foreground sits an ornate brass iron with a carved, floral-like body and a curved handle. The background is an unfussy, warm beige gradient with visible brushwork, so the forms feel lit by gentle, angled light. Shadows fall to the right, anchoring the objects on a tabletop and giving the scene a calm, domestic mood: simple objects, carefully observed, made a little monumental.
