Wonderful mixed media on paper, signed lower left. A beautifully composed modernist portrayal of maternal tenderness by Canadian artist Lillian Freiman. Rendered in delicate graphite line with soft pastel and watercolor washes, Mother and Child exemplifies the lyrical figurative style for which Freiman is celebrated. The gently bowed mother, her eyes closed in quiet contemplation, cradles her infant in a protective embrace, while the child meets the viewer’s gaze directly.

Working in a restrained palette of cool blues, violets, and warm flesh tones, Freiman simplifies form without sacrificing expression, reflecting the influence of her years studying and working in Paris. Her elegant economy of line and subtle colour harmonies lend the composition a timeless, contemplative quality.

Lillian Freiman’s works are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Agnes Etherington Art Centre, and numerous other Canadian institutions.
